CEO, UK construction plc
This was a particularly sensitive search from the client’s perspective, as the new CEO would be the first non-family member in that role, after seventy years. Hence the critical need to ensure that the successful candidate was aligned with the company’s values and culture and would be able to successfully manage the numerous stakeholders involved in a predominantly family-owned but public company.
Managing Director, FTSE 250 business-to-business/consumer plc
The UK MD role was a new position, created to give the CEO, who had doubled-up in that role, the time to drive the organisation’s international expansion. Thus the successful candidate had to be able to manage the relationship with a CEO who would be relinquishing the reins of a major part of the company, with all the sensitivities involved in those circumstances.
Managing Director (Europe), International manufacturing/distribution business
The Europe MD position involved a search across many European countries. The successful candidate had to be able to manage the relationships in an organization with a largely British heritage, with operations across twenty countries and ultimately being part of a US privately-owned parent corporation. This mix led to a small and well-defined pool of potentially suitable candidates, all of whom had extensive international careers and were comfortable operating in very differing cultures.

The client was historically a UK-only firm which had become part of a much larger international business with a northern European heritage. Thus the challenge was to find candidates who understood the nuances involved in bringing together the quite differing approaches of consultants who had operated previously in separate cultures and who had been competitors.
