Afolabi Sonaike

Afolabi is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist, with nearly two decades of experience helping senior leaders and organisations strengthen leadership capability, improve team performance and deliver strategic transformation. Drawing on a rare combination of deep psychological expertise, commercial acumen, and real-world leadership experience, Afolabi partners with clients to build the leadership capability that drives sustainable performance, not just short-term results. He is known for helping leaders and teams think more clearly, align across boundaries, decide better and perform at their best in complex, high-stakes environments.

Over the past twenty years, Afolabi has worked at the highest levels of both consulting and in-house. As such, he brings a unique blend of a seasoned consultant’s external perspective, and the hard-won understanding of what it actually feels like to lead from the inside. Critically, it means he understands what organisations need from their consultants, because he has been the client; equally, he knows what it takes to bring hands-on, practical value, because he has been the leader in-house.

Afolabi was Head of Leadership at Lloyds Banking Group, one of the UK's largest financial institutions, where he led the enterprise leadership agenda, shaping leadership capability across more than 9,000 leaders and partnering with senior executives to align leadership with the Group's long-term strategy and culture.

Prior to Lloyds, Afolabi spent several years as a consultant, advising clients both nationally and internationally across many sectors, including industrial, financial services, renewable energy, government and more. His work enabled executives and senior leaders to deliver improved business performance through a range of people and organisational interventions, encompassing executive and senior team effectiveness, leadership development, assessment, talent and succession planning, executive coaching, and working with under-represented talent.

Afolabi specialises across four interconnected areas:

  • Leadership Advisory and Assessment: Strategic counsel to senior executives and leadership teams, helping them define their leadership strategy, what’s expected of their leaders, and supporting them to lead through disruption.
  • Team Effectiveness: Diagnostic and facilitated interventions to help senior teams perform at their best, building trust, alignment, and collective capability.
  • Leadership Development: Bespoke programmes that develop leadership capability at individual and organisational level, grounded in evidence and designed for real-world application.
  • Executive Coaching: One-to-one coaching for senior leaders and high-potential individuals, helping them to grow their leadership impact, navigate transitions, and lead with greater clarity and confidence.
